The following demonstrate that there is perfectly good accommodation available at much more economical prices. The words "Hostal" and "Hotel" are synonymous up to the 2- or 3-star standard. Love Hotel

Love hotels (room rentals by the hour) generally do not publicise themselves in Lima; taxi drivers are usually the only source of information. Here is one that is gay friendly.

VIP Lima, Jiron Salaverry 569, (between blocks 39 and 40 of Avenida Brasil), Magdalena del Mar.
Tel: (+511) 791-8315. Email: vip_lima@hotmail.com
Website http://www.peruesgay.com/hostalvip/
Here is the owners description: "We are the most discrete hostal en Lima and 80% of our clients are gay. We have spacious rooms, all with full size bed, 21" TV, DVD, and all the "educational" movies a client wishes. They all have private bath with hot water 24 hours a day. Prices per room are 26 soles for 2 hours and 49 soles for 12 hours. Most of our clients come again and again, because from outside it's just a home in the neighborhood, they are treated wonderfully and it a relaxed place where they can feel at home." Additional hours are charged at 7 soles per hour and persons additional to a couple are charged 10 soles each.
Important to note: this hostal is located on JIRON Salaverry, not Avenida Salaverry.

Gay Discos

Laberynto, Jr. de la union 1088, Centro.
Telf: 423-1951.
Website: http://www.peruesgay.com/laberynto
Thurs-Sunday From 10 pm until late. No cover. Pitcher (jar) of beer is S/.10. The owner of the very popular (but now closed) Minotauro opened this new club in downtown Lima in December 2005 and it has quickly has become the hottest spot to spend your evening dancing. It has two levels and is large with live strip shows and a huge video screen. The lighting is first class. It is a little warm inside especially on weekends in the summer. The owner Julio speaks fluent English and will show you around. There is a dark room downstairs but secure your valuables. Rumour has it a new Minotauro will open next door to this disco with restaurant, sauna, video porn cabins and much much more. Look for it in the coming months. Be careful coming and going and use taxis. Frequented by hustlers.

Legendaris, Berlin 363, Miraflores.
Web-site:  http://www.gayperu.com/legendaris/
Open Wed. - Sun. from 11:00 p.m until late. Entry is free on Wed., Thu., & Sun. On Fri. & Sat. it is S/.15 before midnight, S/.20 after midnight (includes one drink).
Miraflores desperately needed a new top class gay and lesbian dance club and this is it. The disco opened on 23rd January 2004 and is already pulling in the crowds. The decor is certainly queer and the sound is intense. The ground floor holds around 350 and the overflow gathers on the two cruise balconies upstairs. There are bars on both floors (cute barmen!). Get there in good time on Fri. or Sat. or you could end up queuing in the street.

Downtown Vale Todo, Pasaje Los Pinos 160, Miraflores.
Telf: 444-6433 or 444-6436.
Web-site:  http://www.peruesgay.com/downtownvaletodo/
Mixed gay and lesbian. Open Wed. - Sun. from 10:30 p.m. Entrance is free Wed., Thu., & Sun.; S/.13 Fri.; S/.18 Sat. (includes one drink). Despite the efforts of some local citizens to close this popular disco it remains open. The capacity is about 500 and attracts a mostly younger crowd. There are drag-queens performing on the stage above the bar, and there may be a show or a stripper at about 3 a.m. There is a cruise bar on the balcony overlooking the dance floor.

Sagitario, Av. Wilson 869, Centro.
Telf: 424-4383, 933-9925.
Website: http://www.gayperu.com/sagitariodisco
Exclusively gay. Open Mon. - Sun. Entrance is free all night Sunday to Thursday and before midnight on Friday and Saturday. Sagitario is one of the oldest surviving gay discos in Lima centre and is busy seven nights of the week. It has relocated from its former location and is now bigger (capacity about 300), air-conditioned, and has been totally renovated. It is on the ground floor and there is a cruise bar on the balcony overlooking the main dance floor. Visit here at your own risk but there is fun to be found here. The disco is located in an unsafe district so you must take a taxi when arriving or leaving.

La Cueva, Av. Aviación 2514, San Borja.
Exclusively gay and lesbian. Open Thu. - Sat. from 11 p.m. This was the first gay disco to open in Lima when it was known as Perseo and is located in a safe district of the city about 15 minutes by taxi from Miraflores. Entrance is free Thursday and Friday, and S/.10 on Saturday which includes one drink. There is a very good show on Friday and Saturday at around 3:00 a.m. The capacity of this disco is about 200, the music is standard fare for Lima and the clientele includes a fair number of womyn and a few transvestites. Since it re-opened it has become popular and definitely worth a visit if you have time.

Gay Bars

VOLUME, Karaoke Video Pub,
Bernardo Alcedo 259, Lince. (enter from block 19-20 Av. Arequipa)
Tel: 471-6351. Website: www.volumekaraoke.com
Open every night 7pm until 3am - no cover.
Lima has little to chose from in the way of nice places for gays to spend an evening out except for discos and sex clubs. VOLUME Karaoke Video Pub was created to fill that gap and specializes in good music, good drinks and good service. The manager Juan speaks english and will give you the tour upon arrival. Kyle (USA) the owner also owns Mansion San Antonio a gay Bed & Breakfast in Miraflores and is often at the bar to greet new faces as well. The song list is huge and you can sing or listen to your favorite tunes or just sit at the bar and chat with the cute barman Jericho over a cocktail. There is a small dance floor as well for a break from the singing. Wednesday is Karaoke contest night.
Happy Hour Mon.-Thu. 7pm - 9pm, 2x1 mugs of beer.

Noxiz, Av Manuel Bonilla 178-A, Miraflores.
Telephone and reservations: 243-1020 / 9789-9562.
Website: www.gayperu.com/noxiz
Open Tuesdays- Saturdays 8p.m. - 2a.m. No cover; various drink promotions.
If you like a more mystical atmosphere where you can have a cocktail or have your Tarot cards read with incense burning then Noxiz is the place. There is no air-conditioning so it can get warm on the weekends. The place is gay friendly and the staff are gay. The music is good and so are the drinks. A nice place to go after a days touring that is close to Kennedy Park in Miraflores. The Owner is Youri, a cute Japanese Lady. English is difficult here. Nice place to take your new bi-lingual friend.

La Sede, Av. 28 de Julio 441, Miraflores.
Tel: 242-2462. E-mail publasede@publasede.com Website: www.publasede.com
Open Wed. - Sat., from 10:00 p.m. until very late.
Gay & lesbian friendly. The owner is Mar (formerly at Kafe Kitsch). Very popular bar with dance floor. The music is a mixture of 80s and popular latino. It gets extremely crowded on Fridays and Saturdays.

Gay Saunas

Comment: Saunas are usually known by the name Baños Turcos (Turkish Baths). Here are four I can recommend (but regretably, not one has a jacuzzi).
Some of them have condoms but they are not openly available and you have to ask. They don't have lube. There is hardly any safe sex information on display.
Here is a glossary for non-Spanish speakers -
Camara de Vapor - Turkish (steam) room. The leaves are eucalyptus.
Camara Seca - Finnish (dry) room.
Sala de Descansa - relaxation and rest room.
Ducha Española - cold shower.
Sala de Video - video room.
Cuarto Oscuro - dark room.
Masajista - masseur.
Piscina - pool.

Baños 240, Jiron Tarma 240, Centro (located off block 15 of Jiron Washington).
Telf: 332-4370. E-mail:  sauna240@ambiente.zzn.com
Web-site:  http://welcome.to/sauna240
Open daily. Exclusively gay, entrance charge is S/.20 except Monday, Wednesday and Friday when it is S/.15. There is a Finnish room, two Turkish rooms, bar, TV room, and upstairs there is a porno video room, dark room, 9 private cabins and male masseurs. Clean and well-maintained, and has been completely refurbished over the last year. This sauna is the most active of the four and the all-nighters on Saturday night are very active so I am told. Most popular times are from late afternoon onwards, particularly Thu., Fri. and Sat. This is not a very safe area to walk in at night so take a taxi when arriving or leaving. Highly recommended if you are seeking action.

Oupen Sauna, Av. 28 de Julio 171, Miraflores.
Telf: 242-3094, e-mail: oupensauna@terra.com.pe
Web-site: http://barrioperu.terra.com.pe/oupensauna/informes.html
Open Mon. - Sun., 2:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. Entrance charge is S/.40 Mon. - Sun. and S/.35 Mon. - Thu. before 6 p.m.
Modern and exclusively gay. There are two Finnish rooms, two Turkish rooms, male masseur, pedicure, manicure, gymnasium, cafeteria and bar, porno video room and about 12 private cabins. It is very clean and well-maintained, the furnishings and decor are pleasant, and the staff are friendly and helpful. Wed. - Sat. after 6 p.m. are the most popular days.
(However, I don't like having to pay extra for an additional towel, or the staff actively soliciting tips, or the lack of heating in the cafeteria.)

Baños Tivoli, Av. Petit Thouars 4041, San Isidro.
Telf: 222-1705/222-1746.
Open daily, 2:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. Entrance charge is S/.25 Wed - Mon, S/.20 on Tue.
Exclusively gay, located in a safe district a short taxi or bus ride from Miraflores. There are two Finnish rooms, two Turkish rooms, three private two-person jacuzzis, gymnasium, porno video room, male masseurs, bar, and nine private cabins. There is a strip show on Saturdays. It is clean and well-maintained; more popular after 6 p.m.

Baños Pardo, Av. Jose Pardo 182, Miraflores.
Telf: 445-5046, 446-1395.
Open daily, 10:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. Entrance charge is S/.35 Fri - Wed, S/.30 on Thu.
This is probably the best but it is not exclusively gay. Having said that, gays go there to meet but any activity is discouraged by the management. It has two Finnish rooms, two Turkish rooms, three plunge pools, large relaxation area, restaurant and bar, hair dresser, manicurist, pedicurist, laundry, plenty of dry towels, and masseurs of both sexes. Good meeting place but little or no action.

Gay Meeting Places

Lima is one big gay cruising area; just watch out for the eye contact. These places listed below are not specifically gay meeting places but if you go to any of them keep your eyes peeled; they all have possibilities.

Parque Kennedy, Miraflores.
This park in the center of Miraflores and the streets surrounding it are cruisy, especially late evening but there have been some cases of guys being lured into a dark side street then attacked. There are also rent boys (known locally as fletes) here; ignore the temptations - there are far better options to meet guys at the discos or bars.

LarcoMar, Parque Salazar, Miraflores.
A spectacular entertainment and shopping complex built into the top of the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean and overlooked by the Marriott Hotel. There is a twelve-screen cinema, multiple-lane ten-pin bowling, Tony Romas, Dunkin Donuts and many other essentials to modern living. Nice place to have a beer watching the sun set over the Pacific (when it isn't cloudy).

Café Café, Mártir Olaya 250, Miraflores (street behind Cine Pacifico).
Popular cafe with tables on the pavement and inside. Great coffee, teas, ice-creams, sandwiches, drinks, meals. The chains under the tables are for attaching your handbag or back-pack.

Gay Guide

English-speaking tourist guide available as companion/assistant for tours, shopping, translation, exploring, travel planning and reservations, by day or night in Lima.
Contact Luis Luna, 9785-2827 (mobile), e-mail: lunafloresluis@hotmail.com

Shopping

Lavini, Alcanfores 348, Miraflores.
also at Shopping Center "San Miguel" # 101, Av. La Mar 2275, San Miguel.
Tel: 471-6798 e-mail: lavini@terra.com.pe
Open Monday - Saturday, 11.30 a.m. - 9.00 p.m.
Tangas, bodies, boxers, jerseys, t-shirts, sweaters, shirts, beachwear, swimwear, accesories and much more.

Gay Beaches

There are no exclusively gay beaches but if you go to Playa Makaha and Playa Waikiki in Miraflores, and Playa Las Cascadas in Barranco you never know who you might meet. Watching the surf-boys doing it standing up amply compensates for having to lie on the hard pebble beach. Take sun-cream (factor 15 minimum); the sun is MUCH stronger than you think - even when it is cloudy. You are advised not to go in the water; apart from it being very cold, taking a dip is virtually guaranteed to have you poised over the potty for a couple of days.

Eating Places

All this activity is sure to make you hungry. Lima has no shortage of eating places from top restaurants to street vendors. Here are a few where I have truly appreciated the food, the service and the price.

Miraflores

La Petite France, Colon 161, Miraflores
Tel: 243-2054. Email: lapetitefrance_peru@yahoo.es
Web-site: http://www.lapetitefranceperu.com/
Gay-owned French restaurant in Miraflores. Open Mon - Sat, 11am - 4pm and 7pm - 11pm. A la carte, executive, and light menu. Visa, Mastercard, Diners & American Express cards accepted.

El Señorio de Sulco, Malecon Cisneros 1470, Miraflores
Tel: 441-0389, 441-0183. Open Mon. - Sun. Visa & Mastercard accepted.
"Some believe this to be the best Peruvian restaurant in Lima" - The Silver Llama Dining Guide to Restaurants in Peru.
Of course it isn't cheap but the food, the selection, the service, the decor and the location all contribute to make this a very satisfying experience for lunch or dinner.

El Perico/Sherik, corner of Alcanfores and Cantuarias, Miraflores
Open Mon. - Sat.
A three-course menu of Peruvian cuisine with a choice of four starters, four main courses and a dessert for S/.6.50 (less than $2)!
These two restaurants are side by side and both are very popular at lunchtime with office workers and executives. Good food, and quick and friendly service. If I am in Miraflores at lunchtime you will probably find me here. Get there before 1.15 p.m. or you could have trouble getting a table.

Rincón Chami, Esperanza 154, Miraflores
Telf: 444-4511. Open Mon. - Sat. 8 a.m. - 9 p.m., Sun. 8 a.m - 5 p.m.
Definitely my favourite place for a-la-carte Peruvian cuisine. This unassuming restaurant is best at lunchtime but arrive before 1.15 pm or you may not get a table. Great food, good portions, friendly service, fair prices; no wonder it is so popular.

Tarata Caffé, Pasaje Tarata 260, Miraflores
Telf: 446-6330. Open daily.
Choice of four starters and six main courses for S/.12. Imaginative lunchtime menu, freshly-cooked food, good service and a nice pianist too. A la carte menu also. Popular.

La Tranquera, Av. Pardo 285, Miraflores.
Telf: 447-5111. Open Mon. - Sun. 12 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Parillada Argentine-style steak-house. If you don't have cholesterol problems then go here. Their steak is imported; the mixed grill is sensational.

El Angelito Verde, Av. Benavides 451, Miraflores.
Telf: 241-8140
Small vegetarian restaurant with lunchtime menu Mon - Fri. Choice of starters, choice of main course, dessert and drink for S/.7.90. Also fresh fruit juices and sandwiches.

Pin Point - Cafe Italiano, Av. Larco 1120, Miraflores
Telf: 242-0521. Open daily.
Small cafe with probably the most delicious cup of coffee in Lima.

Sihams Rincon Arabe Latino, Jr. Independencia 633, Miraflores.
Telf: 447-5229
Another of Lima's secrets. This small and simple restaurant serves excellent Arab cuisine at very reasonable prices. The Surtido (a mixture of different Arabian specialities) is sufficient for two people.

Lima Centre

Don Juan, Jr. Carabaya 318, Centro.
Telf: 428-8378.
You had better be hungry if you go to this old-established restaurant only 50m from the Plaza Mayor serving large portions of excellent Peruvian and International cuisine at very reasonable prices.

La Choza Nautica, Av. Breña, (1st block of Av. Arica), Breña.
Telf: 242-1786.
Take a short taxi ride from the city centre to what is possibly the best fish restaurant in the city.

L'Eau Vive, Jiron Ucayali 370, Centro.
Telf: 427-5612
French cuisine in the heart of Lima. This must be one of Lima's best kept secrets. The restaurant is in a historic convent building and is run by nuns of a French missionary society. If you go in the evening the nuns give you a song. Excellent food at fair prices.

Outside Lima

Here are some gay or gay-friendly places outside Lima that I know of personally or have been recommended to me. As everywhere in Peru discos don't really get started until nearly midnight.
In nearly every town or city in Peru the Plaza de Armas after 10 p.m. is cruisy. Local guys are usually friendly and can provide information on gay places. As always, take care, be cautious, and be safe.

Little by little, the gay side of Cusco is being revealed as I receive more reports from travelers. Please send me any information you can if you find anywhere new or visit any of the places below.
Regretably I have to put in a warning here; Cusco isn't as friendly as Lima and attacks do happen. Definitely the worst thing you can do is walk the back streets of Cusco after dark after having had a drink or three. Always take a taxi between your hotel and the main square or other destination (and back), take a taxi from a legitimate taxi company, after entering the taxi lock all the doors from inside and close the windows, don't let anyone else into the taxi, insist the taxi goes right to the door of your hotel. Note these numbers of licensed taxi companies - 247080, 222222 and 222000. I mean this most sincerely, folks. Be warned.

Macondo, Cuesta San Blas 571, Cusco.
Tel: (084) 229415. E-mail: macondo@telser.com.pe
Gay-friendly cafe and bar. Described as artsy, funky and friendly. Good food with generous portions. Owner Andres (a former model) is also a tour agent and guide, speaks five languages, and with family help runs the bar-cafe. 10% discount in the cafe for SAE members.

Tel: (084) 258184. E-mail: fallenangelincusco@hotmail.com

Hotel Punta Camarón, Panamericana North km. 1235, Zorritos, Tumbes.

Web site: http://puntacamaron.tripod.com/
This gay-friendly hotel is 1235 km (nearly 800 miles) north of Lima near the border with Ecuador and is the place to go if you want a moderately-priced beach hotel that is really nice and peaceful. There is year-round sunshine, a practically deserted beach and clean ocean in which to swim. Take a high factor sun block, the sun is very strong here. I have stayed here on six occasions for a total of thirty days and swam naked in the sea nearly every day. You need to fly to Tumbes (one and a half hours) and the hotel will arrange to meet you if requested.
Room rate $25 per person per night (except festival holidays) includes continental breakfast. (20% discount for SAE members.) Other meals extra.
All rooms with private bathroom and hot water. Swimming pool, recreation area, bar, lounge with satellite TV. Hotel fronts directly onto the beach. Zorritos is a fishing village so you can have some excellent fish dishes in the hotel restaurant. Bruno is the hotel owner and manager; he speaks German and English as well as Spanish.
